The core difference
Traditional microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, prompting the body's natural collagen response. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy delivered through the needles, which is intended to also affect deeper layers of tissue.
Both approaches aim to improve texture and encourage collagen production, but they work through slightly different mechanisms.
Downtime comparison
Standard microneedling typically involves a day or two of redness, similar to a mild sunburn. RF microneedling can sometimes involve a few additional days of downtime because the added energy reaches deeper into the skin.
Who each option tends to suit
Patients focused primarily on texture, tone, or mild scarring often start with traditional microneedling. Patients interested in firmness or more pronounced skin laxity concerns sometimes discuss RF microneedling with their provider instead.
How many sessions are typically involved
Both options are frequently discussed in skin consultations across Tupelo and Northeast Mississippi. Both approaches are usually recommended as a series of sessions rather than a single treatment, spaced several weeks apart.
Deciding which is right for you
A consultation is the best way to determine which option fits your skin goals. The RF Microneedling in Tupelo page has more detail on what that process looks like.
